Beethoven Bagatelles op 126, Piano Concerto No 1 - The Times
Thursday 20 March 2008

[The Bagatelles Op 126] are chiselled wonders from near the end of Beethoven's life, worlds away from the Mozartian poses struck in the concerto written 30 years before. Andante con moto, the first instruction reads, but Anderszewski's motion comes flecked with the most delicately well-judged rubato. The fifth Bagatelle ripples by tenderly, while the fierce dynamic contrasts of the second summon up the fierier epics Beethoven composed at the same time - the Diabelli variations, the Ninth Symphony. Every Bagatelle twists the kaleidoscope; every time Anderszewski finds an invigorating and apt tone and attack to make these jagged morsels far grander than their modest length suggests.
